In the year 1233, Pope Gregory IX associated cats with devil worship, leading to people rounding up all neighborhood cats, and beating them to death. After this happened, the sudden lack of cats to keep infectious rat populations in check in Europe led to rampant spread of disease, causing the famous outbreak of the Bubonic Plaque or “Black Death” many years later to kill 100 million people. So the witch hunts were actually a relatively tiny effect of the popularization of the belief in witches and their familiars.
